Douglas Thomas is a designer, type historian, and teacher. His design and writing explore the nexus of typography, design, and culture, especially via User Experience Design, Publication Design, and Branding. He is assistant professor of graphic design at Brigham Young University. He holds an MFA in graphic design from the Maryland Institute College of Art, where he also taught graphic design. He also holds an MA in social science from the University of Chicago. His design work has been featured in Communication Arts, Print, Graphis, Design Observer, and Eye Magazine. He is the author of Never Use Futura (Princeton Architectural Press, 2017), a cultural history of the typeface Futura. He currently serves as design director for Brigham Young University’s Sandbox, an on campus product accelerator program that facilitates intense collaboration between student designers, product managers, and software engineers.
